Now that you have your first Natboo biodegradable bamboo toothbrush, let’s talk about how to take care of it to ensure that it’ll last a long time. The dental Association recommends that you replace your toothbrush every three or four months. So how do you take care of your bamboo biodegradable toothbrushes?
1. After usage, always pat dry the handle, then dry them lying down on a towel, or upright leaning against something or on the Natboo toothbrush holder.
2. If you bought more than one, keep the rest of the toothbrushes that you are not yet using in a cool dry place. Avoid moisture.
3. Once it reached the end of its lifespan, use it as a cleaning brush to extend its life as long as possible. Some ideas are: to use it to clean your sink, any corners, your car, bicycle, your shower/bathroom, or to dust your computer keyboard. 4. Once it’s really at the end of its functioning period, pull out the bristles and recycle them. Find places near you that will recycle them.
NATBOO TOOTHBRUSH’s handle is made of mao bamboo, and is fully compostable. The bristles are BPA-free nylon, and infused with activated bamboo charcoal- whitening and anti-bacterial. Pull out the bristles before you compost, but don’t throw them away into the landfill. You can recycle them! The paint on the bottom of the brush is certified eco-paint. You can be assured that once you are done with your toothbrush, it will not pile up the landfill, or break into smaller pieces contaminating our food and water like plastic. You can place it (sans bristles) in your home compost turner as a bulking agent, or throw it away with your compost or recycle trash bin.
This toothbrush handle is made of Mao Bamboo, an rapidly renewable* resource. Bamboo grows extremely fast with minimal care and without replanting. It is the fastest growing plant in the world and can grow 1-to-4 inches in a day and regrows quickly after being cut down, making it the number 1 renewable resource. Since the plant’s health is improved by cutting, bamboo can be re-harvested every three years without any harmful effects on the environment.
Bamboo has a unique antibacterial quality due to an antimicrobial bio-agent called “bamboo kun” which is found naturally in its fiber. This Kun makes bamboo a naturally antibacterial, antifungal, and odor resistant element. Bamboo also has the least amount of carbon footprint in its harvesting and production process (compared to hardwood).
When compared to plastic toothbrushes, there’s really no question that Bamboo is better for the environment. Plastic production releases toxins into the environment, it also doesn’t biodegrade, instead it will break down into increasingly smaller pieces before eventually making it’s way into our food and water sources.
(Bamboo earns the moniker of a “rapidly renewable” resource as opposed to a plain old “renewable” resource because it grows extremely fast, especially when compared to wood.)
Natboo toothbrush is currently only available in soft bristles as soft bristles is the recommended bristles by dental professionals. These bristles are infused with activated bamboo charcoal. Activated charcoal is a natural element that is almost magical for your mouth! It whitens your teeth, eliminates bad-breath, reduces plaques, and has anti-bacterial & anti-toxin properties. On top of these amazing attributes, Natboo toothbrushes were designed to look beautiful on your sink countertop!
Natboo has Zero-Waste packaging. The toothbrush comes in a recycled paper box.
The best way to ensure that your brush is long lasting is to keep it clean and dry. After you brush, rinse thoroughly with warm water, make sure there’s no leftover toothpaste on the base of the bristles on the toothbrush head. Shake away all water residue vigorously, and if possible- wipe dry the handle. Let it dry naturally in an upright position. DO NOT place it in a cup or anything cup-like without any drainage that can collect water on the bottom as this condition will encourage mold to grow (not just for bamboo toothbrushes, but for plastic and silicone ones as well).
The Natboo community is involved with many giving-back programs. They work with local organizations to channel a portion of their profits and packs of Natboo toothbrushes to help fulfill the need of local homeless shelters, especially those with homeless children. They also work with non-profit organizations advocating for children’s welfare, women issues, environmental issues, and education. They rotate organizations quarterly.
Their “One Brush for One program” pledges one toothbrush, for a person who cannot afford to buy a toothbrush (primarily homeless children), for every toothbrush that you purchase. They are currently implementing this program locally in Oakland,CA. But as they expand their charity network, they will be expanding statewide, and eventually nationally. Helping your local community is as simple as purchasing a Natboo toothbrush.
